Meet the woman who started the 1-54 Contemporary African Art Fair on episode 031 of Why Morocco

The 1-54 Contemporary African Art Fair in Marrakech has wrapped up for another year. And what a fair it was. From the official fair at La Mamounia to the partner projects in galleries around town and artist studio visits, it was a weekend of thought-provoking art!

In the lead-up to the fair, I had the opportunity to interview fair founder Touria el Glaoui by telephone for episode 31 of Why Morocco. A truly inspiring woman, Touria launched the first 1-54 Contemporary African Art Fair in London in 2013 before travelling to New York in 2015 and finally to Marrakech in 2018.

Designed to provide exposure to artists from the 54 countries that make up the continent, touria talked about the changing landscape and dialogue surrounding African contemporary art since she began researching the idea for an African contemporary art fair about ten years ago.

One of the things I love about the contemporary art scene in Marrakech is that many of the artists featured in the galleries, are young and often stopping by the galleries so the opportunity to meet and exchange is high. And this is something Touria and I chat about during our interview.

If you’re keen to explore the art scene Touria and I talked about during our interview, join us us for one of our Tasting Marrakech food and cultural tours. On our Tasting Marrakech Gueliz tour we explore some of the 20th century architecture in Marrakech, stop at some of our favourite art galleries housed in art deco gems, and wander through parks and religious buildings that surprise visitors who dare to venture beyond the Marrakech medina. We chat history, eat street food and shop. With more and more designers moving their showrooms to the new city and restaurants opening up, this neighbourhood is on the move. But don’t just take it from me. Conde Nast Traveller recently included our Tasting Marrakech Gueliz tour on its round up of 10 cool things to do in Marrakech.
