Essaouira, my favourite city escape

What’s blue and white and filled with beauty?  The old city of Essaouira of course.

Located just two hours from Marrakech, it’s the perfect two-day escape from the hustle and bustle of the Red City.

So when people often ask why I love it there, I can’t really explain.  Because you see there are no major sights or attractions.  But the vibe is cool.   Making it the perfect place to spend two days.  Any more and you may get bored.

So how do I spend my days?

Wandering through the gorgeous old medina.

Enjoying walks along the rugged coastline.

Or just sitting and watching the fishing boats come in.  (Before choosing a selection of fresh fish and having it prepared in the local kitchen!)

And scouring the silver markets and old carpet markets where only locals seem to go.  Or least people with a hair colour other than red.

No trip to Essaouira is complete with a trip to my favourite music shop to listen to new artists, and then pick some up to add to my CD collection.

I almost always leave with a sunburn because there is just nothing better than lounging around on the beach.

And before I know it, it’s time to head back to Marrakech.

So a few tips:  Lunch at  Ferdaouss Restaurant.  Drinks at Caravane Cafe. Sunset at Il Mare under the Berber tent, listening to the sound of the ocean.

Coming to Morocco?  Include this in your itinerary.  Need help finding a guide?  Let me help!

  1. The most beautiful place in the world! I absolutely loved exploring Essaouira with you! I notice you didn’t include the picture of me beside the massive cow carcus…any reason why not?? 😉

    1. I loved our getaway there. Please come back soon. For privacy purposes I decided not to include your photo with a beef carcass. But I do seem to have quite a collection of carcass photos so perhaps a future blog post?!?!!
