Top sites in Marrakech #3 – Jemaa el Fna

It was one of my favourite sites upon arrival in Marrakech. One that buzzes day and night. But mostly at night. And five years on, it’s still a place I love to visit. That magical place is Jemaa el Fna. From watching the sun set, to eating in the food stalls and listening to the traditional music then uncovering the secrets of the square (of which there are many), I just can’t resist a night out here.

But it can be daunting. Touts calling out and pulling diners in to often tourist-only food stalls. Not knowing what to eat, or where to find the local specialties. Worrying about food safety. The snakes, henna ladies, Gnaoua performers, monkeys and their handlers who all want to pose for a photo at a cost. It can all be just a little bit overwhelming.

And so I started Tasting Marrakech food and cultural tours just over a year ago. Because I think it’s an experience not to be missed while in Marrakech. So, along with a state-approved guide, guests join us for dinner and to discover the cultural heritage and uncover the secrets of this centuries-old gathering spot. We usually laugh quite a bit, share stories, discover interesting tidbits of information about local culture, and I can’t resist sharing my insider tips to Marrakech, and Morocco in generally really.

Each tour is custom-made so we eat at stalls depending on guests requests and palate. And we’ll even pick you up from and drop you off at your riad. After all, this is your night out!

If you would like to join me, Mandy, for a tour, get in touch and we’ll send you more details.
