A rainy day in Marrakech

It rarely happens, but on occasion it rains in Marrakech. And with centuries-old infrastructure and open-air houses in the medina, it’s not always pleasant.

So if by chance you are in Marrakech on a rainy day, let me suggest the following:

Chill out
That’s right.  Relax in your riad, apartment, house wherever you may be staying and just unwind. Let the staff take care of you while you sip mint tea and chill out all day. Grab a book, a magazine or play a game.

Since you’re in Marrakech, why not grab a book written about the city? Richard Hamilton’s The Last Storytellers featuring the traditional stories, translated in English, told by the storytellers on Jeema el Fna is a good read.  Or watch the movie Hideous Kinky featuring Kate Winslet. Many scenes were filmed in the foundouks of Marrakech and chances are you may have walked right passed them!  (I watched this movie in Adelaide, Australia in 1999 and it first peaked my interest in coming to Morocco.)

Learn to cook Moroccan style
Call ahead to reserve your spot at one of the cooking schools in Marrakech. Cafe Clock not only offers cooking classes, but also one-on-one oud lessons and Oriental dancing and calligraphy lessons. Just call Cafe Clock the day before or even the morning of and they will be delighted to welcome you!

Pamper yourself
Head to the hammam and relax in the steam bath. Order the full treatment of scrub and massage and enjoy. Whether you choose the local hammam or a more upscale experience, just let your mind unwind!

Gallery tour
Within walking distance are a few galleries in the new town, Gueliz.  Start at BCK Gallery on Rue Ibn Aicha, head over to David Bloch gallery on Rue de Vieux Marrakchis.  Then wander up Rue de la Vieux Marrakechis, passing by the tempting shops, turn right on Rue de la Liberte and enjoy a bit of shopping. It’s largely shaded but bring an umbrella.  Then head to Le Loft for lunch or even just an afternoon coffee before heading to Galerie 127 on Mohamed V Avenue.

Thankfully, it doesn’t rain that often in Marrakech so the next day will probably be business as usual….souking in the sunshine!
