As foreigners flock to Morocco, and locals head off on holiday after celebrating the holy month of Ramadan, it seems like everyone is on holiday here in Morocco with the coastal towns along the Atlantic coast being a popular destination. Since I’m not on holiday, I can certainly dream about going back to some of my favourite stops along the way.
Asilah
The hip artist town of Assilah, just 40 minutes from Tangier is heavenly. Like Essaouira, this little town on the Atlantic Ocean has the best of both worlds – sandy beaches and a cool medina filled with art galleries and murals throughout. Even the houses are like works of art. As is the landscaping. With a variety of Take me away.
Essaouira
This cool, laid-back town is a perfect escape. With a wonderful beach and a chilled out medina for shopping or just relaxing in one of the many cafes, this blue and white little town comes to life in the summer months as locals and foreigners flock to the coast. And even more so during the famous Gnaoua Music Festival (one of the best weekends of my time here in Morocco). Read more about an Essaouira getaway.
Cap Beddouza and the area between Safi and Oualidia
Wild, sandy beaches perfect for surfing or relaxing line the route between Safi and Oualidia. Even in summer these beaches are relatively undiscovered. And with fish restaurants along the way, even the dining is fabulous.
Taghazout
A super laid-back fishing village located about 20 minutes from Agadir, this is the place for surfing. Cute little cafes, fishing boats and great sandy beaches make this the ideal location for those looking for a relaxing getaway.
Merlift
While I’ve not yet travelled as far south as Merlift, I’ve heard the surfing is fabulous, the beaches are magnificent and in some spots nearly private. Despite that, I think I am the only person in Morocco not holidaying in Merlift this summer. That will change.
But since I’m back to the grind, these will just have to be dreams for the moment.
I just had a long day dream about surfing and relaxing at the beach from the photograph of Cap Beddouza, and then realized I’m still at the office and still have work to do 🙁 Thank you for that short escape though 😉
You’re welcome. I dream about that as well, especially when it’s so hot in Marrakech. Morocco’s so gorgeous with so many beautiful places to discover!
One day when I am travelling back to Morocco, I hope to contact you and plan a few days of travel before I leave to come back to USA
