Tonight I attended the Annual General Meeting of an organization I support and to demonstrate how multicultural the organization truly is, the employees dressed in traditional clothing of their homeland. It was so beautiful and informative. One of the women dressed in a jelaba, a long robe worn by both men and women in Morocco.
At one point she covered her face revealing only her eyes and explained that for the most part, covering up is a women’s choice. It signals her request to let her do her thing without unwanted attention. Well that’s a bit different than what we hear in the media.
On a side note, jelebas have a “cool hood” according to a great friend I travelled with through Morocco upon seeing her first jeleba.
